4 Pet Planning Considerations

December 19, 2011 by Deb Sexton Leave a Comment

Do you love your pet enough to consider the use of pet planning as part of your estate planning?  Many families have pets who mean the world to them.  Unfortunately, many people don’t think of their pets when handling their estate planning affairs.  It can be easy to overlook your pet’s needs when you’re busy making other important planning choices.  Take a look at the following information, to understand the importance of pet planning.

  • Does your pet have special needs?  If your pet has a lot of medical needs, you’ll likely want to make sure that he or she is cared for after your death.  With the use of pet planning, you can ensure that all medical and health needs are met by an appointed caretaker.
  • Is there an individual who your pet feels comfortable with?  It’s important to leave your pet in the care of a trusted and reliable caretaker.  With pet planning, you can ensure that the right person is in charge of your pet.
  • Does your pet have a daily routine that is very specific?  It can be difficult for a pet to adjust to changes in everyday activities, especially if you’re not present.  Create a plan so that you can mandate your pet’s schedule.  This will allow your pet to go about his everyday activities with less stress and fear.
  • Is your pet unable to be around small children or other animals?  If you’re unable to care for your pet, you’ll likely want to make sure that he or she is in a comfortable environment.  You can include special instructions for the care of your pet, such as his or her limitations, with the use of pet planning.

If you have a pet, it’s important to consider including him or her in your estate plan.  An estate planning attorney can discuss your pet planning options so that you’re able to make an informed decision.
