5 Steps You Can Take to Prepare for at Home Long Term Care

November 18, 2011 by Deb Sexton Leave a Comment

Many seniors are taking advantage of the ability to age at home while receiving long term care.  This makes it possible to live a comfortable life while staying in a familiar environment with friends and family members.  Take a look at the following 5 steps, to help prepare for this transition.  If you have any questions, or if you’d like to discuss some of the long term care at home, contact an estate planning attorney.

  • Listen to your loved one’s needs.  It’s important to communicate effectively with your loved one, so that you’re able to understand his or her needs.  This can make it easier to prepare for long term care, and ensure that everything is in order.
  • Have a support system in place.  It’s important that friends and family members take part in the care.  This can allow your loved one to feel comfortable and can make it possible for everyone to help out as a family.  This can also limit the need for a full-time hired caregiver.
  • Make changes to the home in order to make it safer.  In some cases, the current home set up may not be beneficial.  You may want to consider some home improvements in order to make it easier for your loved one to get around the home.  It’s important to spot possible dangers, before they cause an accident.
  • Consider the use of senior security systems.  There are a variety of security system options to choose from.  These tools make it possible to be alerted of a medical emergency immediately.  This can allow your loved one to feel safer on a daily basis, even if family members aren’t always around.
  • Hire additional help.  Your loved one may have many care needs.  It’s important to consider hiring different professionals to get assistance with the various levels of care.  This can make it possible for your loved one to get help with medical, rehabilitation, and other everyday needs.

You can make receiving long term care at home a great option.  With a little extra planning and by following the above 5 steps, your loved one will feel more comfortable with this care option.  If you have any questions about preparing for long term care, consult with a qualified estate planning attorney.
