How to Make Visits to a Nursing Home Easier

May 30, 2011 by Deb Sexton Leave a Comment

Many people find it difficult to visit their loved ones in nursing homes.  It can be stressful and upsetting to see your loved one appear so helpless.

If you want to make the trips to the nursing home much easier, take a look at the following guide.  You will find that your visits can be productive if you have a new approach.

  • Go into each visit with a positive attitude.  This will help you to feel more relaxed throughout your visit.
  • Don’t feel sad about the times where you’re unable to visit. You have other responsibilities that are also important.
  • Consider bringing something along to each visit.  Bringing something special can allow you and your loved one to connect.
  • Talk about your favorite memories.  You may want to bring pictures of certain events or memories to help your loved one connect.
  • Bring a favorite CD or play your loved one’s favorite radio station.
  • Consider participating in a social activity with your loved one.  This can help to show that you’re interested and involved in your loved one’s life and home.
  • Celebrate birthdays and holidays.  This can help your loved one feel special.
  • After each visit, find something positive about your experience.
  • Don’t get stressed about visits.  Stress may cause you not to visit at all.   Instead, find something to look forward to each visit.

The more you visit your love one, the more comfortable you will become with seeing him or her in a nursing home.  Your loved one will appreciate the fact that you’re willing and able to visit and express your love.

If you have additional questions about your visits to nursing homes, consult with a qualified elder law attorney.
