Ask Yourself the Following Questions before Choosing a Guardian

May 12, 2011 by Deb Sexton Leave a Comment

Choosing a guardian for your minor children is an important responsibility.  You want to make sure that you choose the best person so that he or she is capable of fulfilling all your children’s needs.  Ask yourself the questions below.  This will help you select the best guardian for your children.  If you have questions about choosing a guardian, consult with an estate planning attorney.

  1. Will this person be able to care for and love your children?
  2. Does this person have other responsibilities that may prevent sufficient care for my children?
  3. Will this person be able to raise your children in a similar way as they are used to?
  4. Does this person have children?
  5. Does this person live near your children’s neighborhood and school?
  6. Does this person have similar beliefs as your family?
  7. Will this person respect your beliefs and values?
  8. Does this person have the financial resources and responsibility to care for your children?
  9. Do your children already know this person?
  10. Will this person allow your children to follow their individual interests?
  11. Will your children be able to easily fit in with this person’s family?
  12. Would your children feel comfortable being cared for by this person?
  13. Will your children be able to easily adjust to their new lifestyle?
  14. Will this person be able to care for your children well into their adulthood?
  15. Will this person be able to provide your children with emotional support?

Take the time to choose a loving, caring and responsible guardian for your children.  This will ensure that your children receive proper care and love if tragedy strikes.

If you have additional questions about choosing a guardian or if you need help choosing a guardian, consult with a qualified estate planning attorney.
